The Kannapolis Intimidators are a minor league Class Low-A baseball affiliate of the Chicago White Sox. The franchise moved to Kannapolis from Spartanburg, South Carolina, in 1995. At that time, the team was a Class A affiliate of the Philadelphia Phillies. Team officials decided to call the team the Piedmont Phillies until a name fitting of the Kannapolis area could be determined.
A name-the-team contest was held in the fall of 1995 and the boll weevil was selected as the team’s mascot, a reference to Kannapolis’ textile history. The team would retain the name Piedmont Boll Weevils until after the 2000 season, when Dale Earnhardt purchased a share of the team’s ownership. In honor of Earnhardt’s legendary nickname, the team’s name was changed to the Kannapolis Intimidators.
