Geocache Description:

A great place for kids!

The cache is located near the new cycle path, which goes from Te Anau to Balloon Loop, and hopefully to Manapouri in the future. The cycle path passes the Control Gates, which regulate the amount of water in Lake Te Anau, as part of the Deep Cove power scheme. 15 percent of New Zealand's electricity is generated by this scheme. Opposition to the original power plan lead to the 'Save Manapouri' campaign, which was New Zealand's first environmental movement. The cache is located in the Te Anau Bird Sanctuary. The takahe, kaka and other caged birds have been injured and are not capable of living in the wild. They are kept here to protect them and for educational purposes. There is a toilet, picnic tables and well-formed paths suitable for baby strollers and wheelchairs.  Great for kids, bring some peas or corn or garden greens to feed the ducks (but no bread, please).  Feeding time for the takahe  is at 9.30 am in the summer, 10.30 in the winter. The cache is near the takahe enclosure, not far from the oval sign that introduces you to the takahe pair Aka and Whito. From this sign, go to the nearby cluster of ti kouka/cabbage trees (kids call them ‘crazy hair day trees’), and look for the swallow.
