George Shinn, the former owner of the Charlotte/New Orleans Hornets, was born in Kannapolis on May 11, 1941. George was not a good student; in fact, he graduated last in his class of 293 students from A. L. Brown High School. However, he was able to attend Evans Business College in Concord.
Shinn worked in the mill, at a car wash, and as a school janitor prior to graduating from Evans. After graduation, Shinn was able to raise enough money to buy Evans College and several other colleges. He consolidated these schools under one system. He eventually sold the schools and utilized the profits to purchase the Charlotte Hornets.
