The expansion of Cannon Mills in the 1920s led to James W. Cannon donating a piece of land to the town for a school.  The first school, Central High School, was constructed in 1924.  After James Cannon’s death, the school was renamed J. W. Cannon High School.  In 1951, the school was renamed A. L. Brown High School and moved to a new facility.  The old facility was converted to a junior high and given the name Cannon Junior High School.

In 2011, an $8.1 million, 50,000-square foot Biotech Wing, called the STEM Academy, was opened.  This new wing was designed to resemble the nearby North Carolina Research Campus Core Lab.  This new wing offers modern science labs and a health center.
