Teenagers have been driving in circles where West Avenue and Vance Street connect since the 1960s. Driving down West Avenue, turning on 1st Street, and pulling back around on the other side of the circle created by cars in pull-in parking has affectionately been called Idiot Circle.
It is said that Idiot Circle is where Dale Earnhardt perfected his left turns that led to his success in NASCAR. Whether Idiot Circle truly led to Dale’s success or not, it was definitely the place where teenagers in Kannapolis went to socialize and show off their cars.
The glory days of Idiot Circle are relived today with the Kannapolis Cruise-In. During Cruise-Ins, vehicles from all eras fill West Avenue. The Kannapolis Cruise-In is a family event and has some simple rules such as, no alcohol, vulgar behavior, displays of speed, and don’t lean on or touch the cars and trucks.
