Slave Cemetary Traditional Cache

This cache has been archived.

vaetanone: This has gone away and there is not really a good place to replace it. It is a shame as this is easy to overlook and should be seen.

Geocache Description:

An easy one replacing the one which was at the Stratford Hall Dining room. A spot easily overlooked.

If you visit Stratford on July 4th, there is no admission fee for the grounds and/or house.  Normally, the grounds fee is $7.00 and the house and grounds fee is $12.00.  On the 4th, there are a number of activities for young and old.

Stratford Hall, Home of the Lees of Virginia. Other writeups give information about the Lee Family.  The Lees were served by a family of Paynes who originally were slaves of the Lees.  Some of the Paynes stayed at Stratford after beingranted their freedom at the end of the Civil War.  There continued to be Paynes at Stratford until in the 1950s when the last one (who was still working at Stratford) died.  He is buried at the cemetary of the church across the road from the entrance to Stratford.  In this cemetary there were a number of his relatives buried.  There is a list of the names of the family members that he was able to remember/identify.   This location is not really very obvious even though it is right along the road.  We had visited Stratford a number of times before we realized what was here.  It is in the cabin/residence area of the grounds and close to a meeting place and the dining hall so it is "lost" in the environment around it.

Years ago, on a tour, it was pointed out to us that frequently graves were located in woodland settings because primrose plants were prolific.  It you notice behind the stone marker, there are a number of primrose plants.
