Geocache Description:

This is less-visited hut at the end of a dead end track, off the Round the Mountain Track. Named in 1941 for Thomas Arthur (Joe) Blyth, schoolmaster in Ohakune from 1909. Apart from his war years, Joe remained in the town until he died in 1940, making 147 ascents of the main peak of Ruapehu. He forged bush tracks, led student groups up the mountain and spent many hours building the track through to the hut first built in 1920-21, and was an inaugural member of Tongariro National Park Board.

Created on behalf of Hamilton Junior Naturalist Club, known as "Junats". Founded in Hamilton, in the Waikato, in 1962, it is an active club for 10-18 year olds interested in all aspects of natural history, conservation, and restoration in New Zealand.

The hut sits (one-hour return) on the Mangaehuehu Hut to Ohakune Mountain Road stretch of the Round The Mountain Track, amidst open alpine tussock country and mountain beech and kaikawaka (mountain cedar) forest. Nearby Waitonga Falls (39 metres) is reputedly the highest falls in the Tongariro National Park. The track from the road passes Rotokawa, a tarn featuring alpine wetland species and views of Ruapehu on clear days.

The cache is hidden, off the ground, 5 metres or so beyond the northern corner of the hut. Remember: recover with like material.

Accommodation may be available at the hut: Blyth Hut

Cache is a camo'd screw-top pill bottle, containing logbook and room for small items. Bring your own pen.
