Geocache Description:

What is a watershed?

Well, geologically, watersheds are basin-like landforms defined by ridgelines and highpoints directing water to lower elevations. Watersheds carry water "shed" from land in the form of rain, melted snow and excess runoff. The water is channeled into creeks, streams and rivers and eventually the ocean. This image shows how watersheds work.

A simple explanation of a watershed is imagining a drop of water falling from your roof and joining a drop in your yard. Then, these drops join a drop in the street and flow to a managed drainage ditch or creek, joining other drops to a larger stream or river and ultimately out to sea.

Smaller watersheds exist within larger watersheds like nesting dolls. For example, Denton County's managed watersheds are part of the Trinity River Basin watershed and ultimately the Atlantic Watershed of North America. Sometimes, city or neighborhood watersheds are disguised as rain gardens or small ponds. Even the rain gutter system on your house is a watershed.

This urban watershed, Unicorn Lake, is disguised as a pond. A paved walking path circumnavigates the pond and provides viewpoints to complete this earthcache.

To log this earthcache, visit the site and submit your answers to these questions:

1. What do you see at the ends of the pond that indicate it is a watershed?

2. Walking inland from the pond, do you believe the elevation increases or decreases?

3. Do you live in a watershed? Explain your answer.

OPTIONAL: Photographs of yourself or surroundings will be met with giddy earthcache-geek excitement.
