Recently a few new caches started showing up in and around the town of Sarcoxie. I thought I should join in the fun. This is a simple hide near the city limits. A quick off and on the highway for you county hunters who might be passing through Jasper County. I also thought it would be interesting to tell a little bit of the town's history here a, as well.
The first question might ask is: how did Sarcoxie get it's name? First you have to know that the town was first called Centerville. I didn't find definitive evidence about which theory is correct but one site seems to have local knowledge. One website says: "Sarcoxie was platted in the early 1830s, and it was originally called Centerville from its location upon Center Creek." Another site can be found that says: "Old Settlers said the name was derived because, “It was halfway between Springfield and the end of the world”. So how did it get the name Saroxie? On this it appears most agree. It was decided that the town should be named for Chief Sarcoxie (Delaware Indians), the friendly chief who had camped along Sarcoxie Spring. Thus, the name Sarcoxie!
Another interesting snipet is that Sarcoxie was "once the strawberry capital of the world and still is the peony capital of the world, and home to Gilbert H. Wild, one of America's largest growers of daylilies, iris, and peonies. Sarcoxie once had its own currency that had a picture of a strawberry on one side. Anyway, I thought this was all kind of interesting. BYOP and a sense of adventure. There are several other caches nearby that culd make your visit to Sarcoxie more enjoyable, as well. Have FUN!!!
