About the Wyoming County Geo-Trail:
This geotrail consists of 12 caches hidden throughout Wyoming County and is designed to delight and entertain you while showcasing the many beautiful, interesting and historic things Wyoming County offers. To complete the trail and claim glorious victory, you should:
- Find at least 10 of the 12 caches
- Scribble down the unique code word you find in each cache
- Visit the Wyoming County Tourism website to enter the code word with its corresponding cache
- If you have 10 code words correct, sit back, relax and wait to get your limited edition/super collectible WyCoGT wooden nickel
- Brag to all your friends about your geo-awesomeness
About this cache:
The abundance of wind resources in Wyoming County makes it the ideal location to tap into the renewable resource of wind energy. Wyoming County was the second county in New York to have an operational wind farm. It now leads all other counties in the state with five separate operating wind farms.
- The Wethersfield Wind Project was the first wind farm in Wyoming County and became operational in October of 2000.
- The Noble Bliss Wind Project has 67 windmills and became fully operational in May of 2008.
- The Noble Wethersfield Wind Project has 84 windmills and became fully operational in March of 2009. This wind farm is the biggest in the county and third in the state.
- The High Sheldon Wind project has 75 windmills and became fully operational in March of 2009 also.
- The Orangeville Wind Project has 59 windmills and became fully operational in March of 2014.
Together these wind turbines are able to deliver 435MW of power to the grid at full capacity. They produce enough electricity to power approximately 150,000 homes for a year.
This cache will show you a couple of nice views of the windmills and finish in a beautiful tract of Wyoming County Forest. Enjoy!
