Lynn Chadwick’s, The Watchers is one of the most significant pieces of art on Loughborough University's campus. Born in 1914, Chadwick was one of the UK’s most significant post-war artists. He won the international prize for sculpture at the Venice Biennale in 1956 and was awarded the CBE in 1964.
The Watchers is located near the Cedear of Lebanon tree outside the Edward Herbert Building, EHB, on Central Park. This tree is between 250-300 years old, and was part of the original Burleigh Hall Estate which was sold to the College of Technology (as part of Loughborough University was known then) in 1958. Other remnants of Burleigh Hall include the Walled Garden, the Gardners Cottage, and Garden of Remembrance nearby.
I once heard the tree next to the watchers described as trying to grow back into the ground by a student and that always stuck with me. Take a walk underneath and shelter from the Sun or more likely rain. A great place to play hide an seek with kids.
