Geocache Description:

The Fox River runs thru the "center" of Elgin. For locals, this "dividing line" has created an East Vs. West sort of undercurrent. While the west side is ever expanding, the east side can hold its own when it comes to the roots of Elgin, while reaching for the future. So, here are some East Side points of interest . Bring your own pen and tweezers.

Walton Island - This is a manmade island built as part of Franklin Roosevelt's Works Progress Administration (WPA) program. The Izaak Walton League dedicated the island to the City of Elgin in the 1930s. While you are here, check out these things of note, Pioneer Family Memorial - Sculptor Trygve Rovelstad, a mostly Elgin resident, started this project in the early 1930's. But up and down funding over the decades, wouldn't put the family on their pedestal until 2001. Across the street from the statue is the new Gail Borden Library, opened in 2003. Behind the statue, is where the previous library stood from 1968 to 2003. Also, note The Flag on the end of the island, placed in 2002. And across from the opposite end of the island is the Hemmens. Built in 1969 after Hattie Pease Hemmens died in 1957 and left a million dollars for the construction of a community auditorium in Elgin. Thanks Hattie and FDR and and everyone else! Congrats FTF Scootiecache
