Here we found ancestors on my father’s side. I never knew there was a family history in Whitingham, where I've lived for almost 40 years!
Whatever your heritage, family is what it’s all about. With this Roots series I wanted to share a little of my family history, which goes back locally to the 1700’s.
“Three groups of people live in every village.
First, those you could see walking around, eating, sleeping and working.
Second were the ancestors…
The third people are those waiting to be born.”
― Alex Haley, Roots: The Saga of an American Family
The Shumways were some of the first settlers in Whitingham, and family members are scattered around town in many cemeteries, though some already had caches in them, so I couldn’t do any new Roots tributes there.
The stones here are in the first row as you drive in. Of course, we found them after wandering the entire lower end where all the other older stones are! These are family members of Amasa Shumway, who is buried in nearby Davidson Cemetery. (already a cache there.)
Amasa Shumway – born 1756 in Oxford MA, died 1830 Whitingham VT.
Served in the Revolutionary War. Married in 1776 and had 8 children.
Moved to Whitingham and was among the first settlers in town, along with his brother Levi.
He later had 3 subsequent wives, and more children. All four wives and some children are buried with him in Davidson Cemetery.
