La Chiesa risale al XIV secolo e rappresenta, nelle sue navate interne, uno dei pochi esempi di architettura gotica presenti sul territorio.
La chiesa è stata sede vescovile e cattedrale della diocesi fino al 1818.
Un tempo, la cattedrale vicana, si trovava nella zona bassa della città, ma il centro cittadino venne spostato nella zona alta in seguito alla incursioni dei pirati e fu così che per volere del vescovo Paolo Pace, si decise di costruire l’attuale struttura. La nuova sede del vescovado fu edificata, tra il 1320 e il 1330, sulle rovine dell’antico tempio romano di Cibele.
La chiesa, dopo aver vissuto importati lavori di restauro, dovuti anche ai danni subiti dal terremoto del 1980, è stata riaperta al culto nel 1995, dopo quasi vent’anni di chiusura. La struttura si presenta oggi con una facciata in stile barocco, ricostruita nel 700, mentre all’interno è suddivisa in tre navate con la centrale culminante in un’abside trecentesca. La sagrestia è in stile gotico ed al suo interno sono presenti 34 affreschi che illustrano i vescovi vicani.
Tra le opere presenti nella chiesa, di importante rilievo sono le urne di Gaetano Filangieri, economista del settecento vissuto nel castello Giusso, altra importante struttura vicana a pochi passi dalla chiesa e una statua della Vergine con una corona d'oro arricchita da pietre preziose.
Di fianco alla chiesa sorge un imponente campanile cinquecentesco edificato su tre piani. La rosea chiesa della Santissima Annunziata è anche chiamata “di Punta a Mare” ed è una meta molto ambita dalle coppie di sposi che intendono celebrare matrimonio.
All’esterno della struttura troviamo un piazzale che affaccia sul borgo marino offrendo un panorama mozzafiato che abbraccia il golfo di Napoli e la costiera.
L’ex sede vescovile, per la sua particolare bellezza e per la posizione che le garantisce un certo fascino, nell’anno 2014, si aggiudicò il primo posto in una classifica stilata da Marcopolo sui santuari più belli d’Italia.

The church dates back to the 14th century and represents, in its inner naves, one of the few examples of Gothic architecture present in the territory.
The church was bishopric and cathedral of the diocese until 1818.
At one time, the nearby cathedral was in the lower part of the city, but the city center was moved to the upper area following the incursions of the pirates, and so it was for the will of Bishop Paolo Pace that he decided to build the current structure. The new seat of the bishopric was built, between 1320 and 1330, on the ruins of the ancient Roman temple of Cibele.
After having lived in the restoration work, due to the damage suffered by the 1980 earthquake, the church was reopened to worship in 1995, after almost twenty years of closure. The structure today has a Baroque façade, reconstructed in the 700's, while inside it is subdivided in three naves with the central culminating in a 14th century apse. The sacristy is in Gothic style and inside it there are 34 frescoes illustrating vicar bishops.
Among the works in the church are the urns of Gaetano Filangieri, an economist of the eighteenth century who lived in the castle of Giusso, another important structure close to the church and a statue of the Virgin with a gold crown enriched with precious stones.
Next to the church stands an impressive sixteenth-century bell tower, built on three floors. The royal church of the Most Holy Annunziata is also called "Punta a Mare" and is a popular destination for couples who want to celebrate marriage.
Outside the property there is a small square overlooking the seaside village offering a breathtaking panorama that embraces the gulf of Naples and the coast.
The former bishop's place, for its particular beauty and for the position that guarantees a certain charm, in the year 2014, it won first place in a ranking made by Marcopolo on the most beautiful sanctuaries in Italy.
