Osborn Family Burial Ground
Brielle Historic Site
The Osborn Family Burial Ground is the final resting place of departed members of a prominent local family containing 21 known burials made between 1822 and 1868. One Revolutionary War veteran is buried here, Lt. Abraham Osborn (1752 - Feburary 16,1835), along with his wife Elizabeth and other members of the Osborn family. Abraham Osborn served in the Monmouth County militia, first as a private; he was promoted to Lieutenant after the Battle of Monmouth in 1778. He was captured by the British in 1780, but escaped.
On April 30, 2000, the Union Landing Historical Society embarked on a massive reconstruction project of the graveyard which had deteriorated over the years and was severly overgrown. It was necessary to remove seven large trees as well as underbrush. Every gravestone, with the exception of that which marked the grave of Lt. Osborn, was partially or completely broken, some in as many as six fragments. Most were scattered and many pieces buried or missing. The challenge was to attempt to match up the broken prices, then locate where each headstone (and some footstones) were origially located. All pieces from the headstones of 18 of the 21 graves were located and cemented together with special epoxy cement.
A map board is placed ot he right of the gate showing the location of all graves, plus headstone inscriptions. Those buried here include Lt. Osborn and his wife Elizabeth. Also, the three wives of his son James: Elizabeth, Hannah and Jane, all who died at an early age. At the moment, it is not known in which graveyard James himself is buried. Thirteen of his children are buried here, from ages one day through childhood and young adult.
A graveyard rededication ceremony took place on Saturday, May 26, 2001.
