Geocache Description:

Mathoura is the gateway to well known inland fishing destination Picnic Point in the Milewa State Forest.

Millions of years of geological activity is relfected in a significant feature of the area. The Cadell Fault is a north-south fault in the earth's surface. About the time the Aborigines first settled here, land west of the line rose up to 10 metres above the land to the east. This fault can be seen, as the ground slopes down to the forests east of the Cobb Highway. Originally blocking the flow of the old Murray River, the waters split, some flowing south towards Moama and Echuca, and other water flowing north (Edward River) to Deniliquin, the two arms rejoining some 200km west.

The Milewa Forest's main watering system stems from the Murray and Edward Rivers and numerous creeks including the Gulpa Creek which often flood in the wet weather and usually during the winter months, covering thousands of hectares for up to two months of the year. Fishing enthusiasts find Gulpa Creek and the Edward and Murray Rivers an absolute delight. They are well known to anglers as some of the best Australian native fishing spots in the country with Murray Cod being the prized catch.
