Il castello sarebbe stato eretto nel 1090 ma mancano notizie precise fino al 1202, quando, entrato il territorio a far parte del marchesato di Clavesana, questi signori strinsero alleanza con Genova.
Nel 1286 Albenga vorrebbe impadronirsene ma Emanuele l, che vi aveva preso dimora, lo difende strenuamente. Se ne impossessa invece il marchese Giorgio Del Carretto nel 1346.
Trascorsi pochi anni il feudo torna ad essere dominio dei Clavesana e ciò fino al 1393, quando il marchese Giovanni di Saluzzo lo vende al Comune di Genova della quale, da questo momento, Aquila d'Arroscia seguirà il destino. Dal 1928 al 1947 fu aggregata al Comune di Borghetto d'Arroscia.

The castle of Aquila once controlled the division between the Arroscia and the Pennavaira Valley: probably built towards the end of the eleventh century, it was always the object of a conflict between the Clavesana family, the municipality of Albenga and the Del Carretto family of Zuccarello.

Die Burg von Aquila ist gegen Ende des 11. Jahrhunderts entstanden und diente zur Kontrolle des Übergangs vom Arrosciatal in das Penavairatal. Über einen sehr langen Zeitraum war die Burg ein Grund für Auseinandersetzungen zwischen der Stadt Albenga, der Familie Clavesana und der Familie Del Carretto von Zuccarello.

Le château d'Aquila a été créé à la fin du XIème siècle afin de contrôler les vallées de l’Arrosa et du Penavaira. Le château a été pendant très longtemps une source de conflit entre les villes d’Albenga, Clavesana, et la famille Del Carretto de Zuccarello.
