To Swift Current (TSC) caches can help you enjoy our grassland as you travel between Medicine Hat and Swift Current. These caches are located along the Trans Canada Highway, at pullouts for safe caching. All are family friendly, generally more accessible to east bound traffic, and most are large enough for trading items. No need to cross fences, but a couple of them require a short drive to points of interest off the TCH. Enjoy the beauty of the rolling prairies as you go.
This is one of the Canadian Wildlife Service, or CWS National Wildlife Areas scattered across our region. Detailed map books will show you many of these. The Prairie National Wildlife Area actually has about a dozen pieces, and they are worth tracking down. This one, the Webb National Wildlife Area, and most of the others are open to the public. It is a good opportunity to stretch your legs. This would be a good place to find wildflowers in season. Some of this site has been reseeded with native species of flowers and grasses. As the grasses have grown up, with no large grazers to mow them, the gophers have decreased in number. They tend to like shorter grasses, such as along highways. If you are visiting in summer, you probably have seen lots of gophers, more correctly called Richardson’s ground squirrels, in your travels. But you probably won’t see any here in the wildlife area!
