The Sunnyside Neighborhood in East Flagstaff became an affordable area for Hispanic families to buy land and build homes during the 1940s. The boundaries of the original barrio were Route 66 to the south, Izabel St. to the west, Sixth Ave. to the north, and Fourth St. to the east. Local businesses were scattered throughout the neighborhood, but through time Fourth St. became the main commercial district.
This building was formerly Sky-Hi Lanes, one of two bowling alleys in Flagstaff established in 1957 by Leonard (Len) and Ida Zulfer Sonka. The bowling alley provided one of the primary sources of family entertainment for Sunnyside residents until its closure in 2000.
