Geocache Description:

FRENCH ISLAND
Located in the middle of Western Port, French Island is considered the jewel in the crown of the Mornington Peninsula and Western Port Biosphere Reserve. It is the largest island in the bay, approximately 170 square kilometres in area and reaching a maximum height of 96 metres above sea level at Mt Wellington, near its centre.

Due to its isolation, history and the work of conservationists over the last 40 years, French Island remains a relatively undisturbed environment, less than 70km from the heart of the thriving city of Melbourne.

HAZEL POMADERRIS
Pomaderris aspera is a plant from eastern and southern Australia. Mostly seen south of the Barrington Tops in New South Wales to as far south as Wilsons Promontory and Cape Otway on the mainland. Also occurring in Tasmania. Scattered individuals are found in northern New South Wales to as far north as Bunya Mountains National Park in Queensland.
The species name refers to the rough feel of the leaves, asper in Latin.
The common name is hazel pomaderris.
In about 1990, botanists discovered a single Hazel Pomaderris here, the last survivor after 150 years of bushfires. From this single tree, a nice little grove of about 20 has grown up over the last 15 years.
Please treat the area with the respect it deserves.

THE CACHE
As you stand on the trail at GZ, look uphill towards the forked tree (hint) - the hidden grove of Hazel Pomaderris, the only ones on French Island, can be seen on your right, about 4 metres further along the trail.

NB:
Access to the island is by ferry from Stony Point or Cowes.
For an extra fee you can bring your own bicycle with you.
You will need to come prepared with drinking water and puncture repair kit.
Food and some supplies are available from the French Island General Store.
