Net buiten de drukte van de wallen bevindt zich de prachtige en nog relatief rustige lastagebuurt met de nieuwmarkt en de grachtjes van de kromboom en rechtboomsloot. Op de rand van de lastagebuurt ligt de oude waal, de breedste gracht van Amsterdam. In de zestiende eeuw lagen hier schepen aangemeerd aan palen ter overwintering of reparatie. Toen de oude waal te ondiep was geworden werd het waalseiland aangelegd wat u aan de overkant ziet liggen. Links op het waalseiland ziet u het scheepvaarthuis, het voorbeeld van amsterdamse school architectuur, dat thans in gebruik is als het Amrath hotel. Als u naar rechts kijkt ziet u de Montelbaanstoren, gebouwd in 1516 als onderdeel van de verdedigingslinie van de stad. Omdat de klokken van de toren niet gelijk liepen en ooit op onregelmatige tijden spontaan begonnen te spelen heeft de Montelbaanstoren de bijnaam "Malle Jaap". Geniet van een van de mooiste plekjes van de stad.
Terwijl u dat doet zoek de cache. De nanocache (een pincet en pen zijn handig) is verstopt in iets behoorlijk ongebruikelijks. Past u op dat u niet in de hondenpoep stapt tijdens het zoeken, hondenpoep op straat hoort ook bij Amsterdam maar is lastig uit uw zolen te verwijderen.

Just outside the hustle and bustle of the red light district lies the beautiful and still relatively quiet "Lastage" neighborhood with the Nieuwmarkt and the canals of the rechtboom and kromboomsloot. The oude waal, the widest canal of Amsterdam, lies on the edge of the Lastage neighborhood. In the sixteenth century ships were docked here on poles for wintering or repairs. When the old waal became too shallow, the Waal Island was created which you can see on the other side of the canal. On the left side of the Waalseiland you will see the Scheepvaarthuis (shipping house), the most well known example of Amsterdam school architecture, which is currently being used as the Amrath hotel. If you look to the right you will see the Montelbaan tower, built in 1516 as part of the city's defense line. Because the different clocks of the tower did not run equally and started playing spontaneously at irregular times, the Montelbaan tower has the nickname "Crazy Jaap" (Jaap being a dutch name).
Enjoy one of the most beautiful places in town. As you do, search the cache. The nanocache (tweezers and pen are handy) is hidden in something pretty unusual. Please be carefull not to step into dog poop while searching, dog poop on the street also belongs to Amsterdam but is difficult to remove from your soles.
