The early history of prisoners in Pacific County was documented in the "Jail Book" -- a large leather-bound volume with gilt-edged pages and 20 columns to record pertinent details of each detainee. One column of interest was the "Special Marks or Peculiarities as to Prisoner History", where such comments as "half-breed", "addicted to drunkenness", "opium fiend" and "hard drinker" were noted as identifying characteristics.
Another column heading stated "Date of Leaving Prison -- escaped or discharged", leading to the assumption that escape was a viable outcome of confinement in prison.
Prisoner Heurion Celestin, accused of murder, was described as "very bald, wears chin whiskers", while a fellow inmate Thompson "has wound on top of head, appears to be slightly deranged, tattoo on right arm (head of woman). D.R. Whitace was described as a "dead beat", and another, Eugene Russ "ruptured and subject to fits of insanity".
The names referenced in the cache titles and the outlaw photos are fictional and bear no relation to actual people, but the descriptive text for each cache relates factual information.
