Geocache Description:

During the days of prohibition, patent medicines were among the popular ways to obtain liquor. Most were produced by small manufacturers, often family enterprises, typically vegetable extracts laced with ample doses of alcohol. Many were also fortified with morphine, opium or cocaine.

Remedies claimed to cure tuberculosis, indigestion, arthritis, veneral disease, baldness, cancer and "female complaints". Even bust developers and manhood restorers were promoted. Sibley's Solar Tincture was promoted as a cure for sudden death.

Pacific County's proximity to the Pacific Ocean and the Canadian border offered other benefits for liquor distribution, where alcohol was legal and plentiful. The county's many isolated coves and inlets provided opportunities for camouflaging mysterious boats that arrived under cover of darkness. One local fisherman wrote "In the fall of the year when the salmon season was over, it was no trick to take your boat up and run to Vancouver BC, load two or three hundred cases of good whiskey, and come down here off the mouth of the Columbia River. Then you could sell it out at sea to the local bootleggers or you could run it in here yourself."

The names referenced in the cache titles and the outlaw photos are fictional and bear no relation to actual people, but the descriptive text for each cache relates factual information.
