Geocache Description:

Train "X" -ing

The Old Highway 59 used to swerve like this (see photo) in order to safely cross the former train tracks more closely to a perpendicular 90 degrees, instead of a more costly and potentially dangerous angled crossing. Once the tracks were gone in the early 1970's, there was no longer any need for the swerve so when the highway was upgraded, it was also straightened out to the more "direct" route that exists today.

There is clear evidence of the old train route and old highway. It is a throwback to a bygone era, before automobiles; when riding the rails was the fashion of the day.

You can also get a good view of the marsh from here. This is the swampy area that used to separate "Little Elk Island (now know as the Victoria Beach peninsula) from the mainland, before the causeway was built to connect the two areas.
Passage through here in the large York boats in the 1600s-1800s was dicey, so the Voyageur trade route extended all the way around both Little Elk Island and Big Elk Island (now known simply as Elk Island), in order to make their way to/from the Winnipeg River to/from the Red River.

This should be a quick find.
But watch your step.
This is replacement for GC5BBGY after the municipality removed all the trees where the old cache was hiding.
Bring your own pencil.
You may access the old rail bed from the posted waypoint or from the trailheads to the west (see waypoints listed in the other caches in the 'XYZ Trail' series of caches:"Y"-MCA and It's a "Z"oo in Here...).

This cache is NOT in the restricted part of Victoria Beach, so vehicle access is possible year-round. However, there is no parking near the trailhead. If arriving by vehicle and if the gate is open, you might be able to drive right up to the cache. If not, please park on Highway 59, and obey the "No Parking" signs.
Do not block the gate.
