Geocache Description:

Pacific County was divided on the sale of alcohol dating back to the 1850's. Liquor-related arrests were few in the county's Jail Book until Chu Chu Lee, described as an "opium fiend" served ten days in the cell for selling liquor to an Indian. Lee's arrest was indicative of the continuing concern over "wild Indians and liquor", prompting the passage of a law against selling intoxicating drink to Indians.

There were many imaginative ways people got around the various laws related to liquor sales. One local merchant was said to have amassed a fortune of more than a quarter million dollars by selling pencils for a dime. There was, of course, a gimmick -- the purchaser of every pencil was entitled to a trip to the back room where a barrel of moonshine was kept. Customers included Indians, of course, since the law did not forbid the sale of pencils!

The names referenced in the cache titles and the outlaw photos are fictional and bear no relation to actual people, but the descriptive text for each cache relates factual information.
