Geocache Description:

First check out the cool grove of Balsam Poplar trees preserved in a small strip park near the Coastal Trail! Then you can get a smiley looking for a small cache hid with camouflage.

Balsam Poplars comprise a group of 10 subspecies, many of which can be found in Alaska. They are large, deciduous trees that can reach 150 feet or more in height and are recognizable by their leaves that are rounded at the base, pointed on the tip, and have a whitish, waxy coating on their underside. The name actually originates from the pleasant balsam smell that new leaves and buds give off in the spring.

Why are the poplar trees here? They favor areas near lakes and streams and this spot is on top of what used to be Hood Creek, the outlet draining the airport float plane lakes into Knik Arm. The building between the cache and the Coastal Trail is a "Wet Well Knik Interceptor" which intercepts fresh water about to enter the saltwater of Knik Arm and would pump water in times of increased water usage for the surrounding area.
