Blackbeard

was the Fiercest, most Awesome Pirate of all time.

Let's get together and discuss True Pirate history and facts

Edward Teach was born into a respectable, wealthy family in Bristol, England in 1680. He served in the Royal Navy aboard HMS Windsor in 1706, and then as a privateer during the rest of Queen Anne's War (1701 - 1714). At the war's conclusion, he turned to piracy and served an apprenticeship under Benjamin Hornigold before becoming a pirate captain in his own right. His cognomen was derived from his thick black beard and fearsome appearance, and he was reported to have tied lit fuses under his hat to frighten his enemies.

Blackbeard's piratical career ended on November 22nd, 1718 at Ocracoke Inlet on the North Carolina coast. There he encountered an armed contingent sent by Virginia Governor Alexander Spotswood and led by Royal Navy Lieutenant Robert Maynard. In a desperate battle aboard Maynard's sloop, Blackbeard and a number of his fellow pirates were killed. Maynard returned to Virginia with the surviving pirates and the grim trophy of Blackbeard's severed head hanging from the sloop's bowsprit.

A MWOG event open to everyone

We will also have a chance to talk about :
Queen Anne's Revenge

Launched in England as a merchant vessel in 1710 the 200-ton frigate, originally named Concord was captured by France in 1711. The French renamed her La Concorde de Nantes and used her as a slave ship for 3 voyages across the Atlantic.
Late in the fall of 1717, off the island of Martinique, Blackbeard and his fellow pirates captured the La Concorde and took her to the island of Bequia in the Grenadines where the French crew and the enslaved Africans were put ashore, and she was refitted as a war ship with 40 canons. After reeking havoc from Delaware to Honduras for many months, Blackbeard attempted to enter Old Topsail Inlet in North Carolina, now known as Beaufort Inlet. During that attempt on the 10th of June 1718, Queen Anne's Revenge grounded on an ocean sand bar and was abandoned.
A private research firm discovered the wreck of Queen Anne’s Revenge on November 21, 1996. The shipwreck lies in 28 feet (8.5m) of water about one mile (1.6 km) offshore of Fort Macon State Park (34°41′44″N 76°41′20″W), Atlantic Beach, North Carolina. As a piece of international history, Queen Anne's Revenge was preserved added to the National Register of Historic Places in 2004 and it is listed as owned by the state of North Carolina.
