It was a chilly June evening and the family had headed out on a camping trip in to the midlands of Kwazulu Natal. It was really chilly on this full moonlit night and Jasper and Gordon-James huddled around the campfire while their grand-dad told them a campfire story. It was about a band of pirates who had travelled in-land to hide their treasures as no-one would look for treasure this far away from the sea.
"Wow!" said Jasper after the story was done, "what if there was treasure buried out here in the forrest or down by the stream or in the lake!?"
"Well" said Grand-dad "you just never know, we could always hide some of our own.." "Yaaaaay!", said the boys and they jumped up to find something to hide.
"Not now" said Grand-dad, "you'll have to go out in the morning."
Early the next morning the boys set out into the woods to find a hiding spot for their treasure. The sun was only just rising and the valley was full of thick mist.
They headed past the treehouse and up the trail into the forrest.
As they ventured deeper in to the woods the cold damp atmosphere soaked in around them and they started to wonder if they were still alone.. "should we hide it here?" asked Jasper.. and as Gordon-James was about to reply they heard a rustling in the bushes...
"What was that?"
"I thought it was you!"
Then before either boy could react a large black animal erupted from the bushes behind them with a blood-curdling howl!
The boys dropped their treasure and ran as fast as their little legs could carry them down towards the stream!
Part 2.
The boys ran and ran, stumbling frantically down the trail through the bushes, picking up glistening dew-covered cobwebs as they tumbled onward. The howling seemed to be getting ever closer and the boys feared for their little lives.
Huffing and puffing they charged under the tree house and leaped over the stream rushing down towards the dam. Too exhaused to continue they collapsed in a heap, doing their best to catch their breath.
"What was that and where did it go!?" asked Jasper, "I thought for sure that we were brrrreakfast!"
"I hope I never find out!" said Gordon-James, "one thing I do know is that we dropped my treasure! But I am surely not going to go back for it!"
"Nevermind," said Jasper, "I still have mine - lets find a spot nearby to hide it and high-tail it back to camp!"
