Vendel a legenda szerint a egy 7. századi ír királyfi volt, akinek emlékét okt. 20-án ülik meg. A királyfi Rómába zarándokolt, ahol remetéskedett, majd egy birtokoshoz szegődött és annak a nyáját őrizte. A legenda adott alapot arra, hogy a pásztorok védőszentjévé választották. Kultuszának nyomai hazánkban a 18. sz.-ban bukkantak föl. Ettől az időtől kezdve találkozhatunk szobraival, képeivel, amelyek leggyakrabban pásztorként ábrázolják. Szobrai főleg a Dunántúlon, Buda vidékén, Heves megyébenben és a Jászságban gyakoriak.
Mivel az állatállomány Pilisborosjenőn is a megélhetés alapját jelentette, a falubeliek gyakran fohászkodtak Szent Vendelhez, a földbirtokosok és állatterelők szentjéhez segítségért. Szép szokás volt, hogy ünnepén, október 20-án körmenettel vonultak a szoborhoz imádkozni, énekelni és áldást kérni. Mire a processzió odaért, a pásztorok a közelbe hajtották a csordát és a legények kilovagoltak a lovakkal, így a pap az állatokat is megáldotta.

According to legend Vendel (or Wendelin) was a 7th-century Irish prince whose memories is remembered on Ocober 20th. The prince has pilgrimed to Rome, where he became a hermit, then went to a farmer and kept his flock. The legend provides a basis for being chosen as the patron saint of shepherds. The traces of his cult in Hungary were founded in the 18th century. From that time onwards, we can meet with his statues and paintings, most often depicted as shepherds. Sculptures are common in Transdanubia, Buda, Heves county and the Jászság.
As in most rural areas, livestock formed an important part of a family's daily life and many people attached traditions to help keep their domestic animals healthy and nurtured. On October 20th, landowners marched in a procession and prayed to the memorial of St. Vendel (or Wendelin), the patron saint of country people and herdsmen. On the day of the procession, huge herds of livestock showed up with their owners at the memorial, and landowners could ask their priest to bless their animals as well.
