In December of 1998, the Bassett Branch of the Blue Ridge Regional Library (BRRL) expanded and separated the genealogical and historical records from their other books and services. The current Library covers 6,000 square feet housing a collection of over 63,000 items, and stands facing its former site, now the Bassett Historical Center.
You do not need to be an architect to notice the symmetry of the new building and grounds. The perfectly centered entry vestibule is flanked by brick walls of equal length. The walls offer two large picture windows each, with equal distance between the windows and again between the outer window edges to the end of the walls. Down-lights are centered between the picture windows on both sides, with identical wrought iron benches centered under the down-lights. Even the front flower urns and star-topped downspouts on each side of the entry vestibule are mirror images. A line of crepe myrtle encircle the building. I didn't count the trees, but the visual balance they provide, framing the entire scene, gives quite a feeling of symmetry.
But something is not quite the same. Something that might draw you to investigate further. Hmmmm....
This could easily be a Park N Grab, but with a nice park/playground and picnic tables right next door and the National Historic Register's John D. Bassett High School just beyond the park, not to mention the Historical Center and beautiful Smith River right across the street, I hope you will linger. Perhaps enjoy a peaceful moment and picnic under the enormous shade tree by the playground. Caution: It looks like a fine tree for some altered altitude, but I noticed a "big hairy rope" on that tree... which is why you won't be having to climb for this cache. You're welcome.
Final notes before you head out:
--Even during operating hours, which is when bathrooms and drinking water are available, btw (see Web Link above), people just walked around me. They had things to do; books to read! Nevertheless, please use common sense when accessing the cache. Let's keep this newbie in the game.
--The cache has a small opening - eyeballing, about 3.5" in diameter (across).
--It's going to be very important to replace this cache in the host exactly as found, which won't be hard to do, since instructions are right there. And for heaven's sake leave the magnets in place. They are there to enable accessibility for all.
--I do check the logbook, so make sure to sign it before posting your find on the cache page.
--Please do NOT post photos of the host or its location. Thank you so much!
--For lagniappe, you could post how many you had to check before signing the log.
AS WITH ALL CACHES, PLEASE REPLACE *EVERYTHING* YOU MOVE AS IT WAS BEFORE YOU ARRIVED.
