ST JOHN OF JERUSALEM, WINKBURN
St John of Jerusalem, Winkburn is a Grade I listed building, achieving the status on 11 August 1961.
The dedication to St John of Jerusalem is extremely unusual and owes the dedication to the church being the base for a cell of the Knights Hospitaller from 1198-1382.
The church today is largely from C12th although alterations were made in C13th, C14th, C16th with the tower rebuilt in C17th and the building being re-roofed in 1853.
St John comprises a nave and chancel without aisles, chapels, vestry or a chancel arch. The porch is south facing and there is one west tower. The tower has evidence it once had a clock on it, although a clock does not exist now.
The stonework bears a strong resemblence to nearby Southwell Minster which dates from around the same time.
The windows range wildly in date from C14th to C19th. The upper stages of the belfry are from the restoration in 1632, with a stone in the north exterior tower wall attesting this.
Inside the pews are dated C18th with the pulpit C17th.
There is a momument, dated 1609, to William Burnell. The pub that was once open in the village, now a private residence, was called The Burnell Arms.
Unusually, the font is wooden and dates from C17th. The pulpit is extremely unusual also.
Today, St John is in the Northern Lights Cluster of churches along with 5 other churches.
I really would recommend a look inside the church which is always open.
