There were several schools in Alberta with the name "Hillcrest" contained therein. Most of those were in the Crownest Pass and associated with the Hillcrest Mine in Crowsnest.
The school operated from 1904 but the first recorded teacher was a Miss Brock in 1910. Not sure who taught before then, maybe some local person who was educated and taught reading and arithmetic.
A later teacher was Mr. Betton who taught all his students to play a musical instrument. This was about 1928. One has to wonder where the musical instruments came from. Information from "Pioneering With a Piece of Chalk" by Bill Baergen
Some excerpts from Fencelines and Furrows by the Community group in 1969. "1904 a contract was signed with Mr. Daggett to build the school. 1905 the tax was 5 cents per acre, 1910, a teacher was hired for $55 per month, 1920, teacher was paid $100 per month and was given $15 to buy prizes for worthy students. The Board also bought new maps and also purchased report cards and asked the teacher to send them home monthly. 1922, the Board decided not to buy all the "stuff" the teacher had requested. 1940, the school was closed and the students went by van to Herrington. The school was not only a place of learning but was the focal point of social activities in the community and often served as a church"
