Clock Tower Memorial – 1st Woodend 90th Series
1st Woodend Group was formed in 1927 and has been operating very successfully ever since. In 2017 we decided to create a series of geocaches to help celebrate 90 years of continuous scouting in Woodend. Our scouts were first introduced to Geocaching during the Australian Geocaching Competition run by Scouts Australia in 2013.
The Woodend Clock Tower, on High Street, was dedicated in 1928 in memory of the First World War. The site is used annually in the local Anzac Day ceremonies, with wreaths laid at the base and the flag raised on the dome. The tower now contains plaques dedicated to those who fell in the Boer War and Gallipoli and France. Honour rolls of enlistments for World War One and World War Two have also been placed on the memorial.
It is built in a neo-Baroque style, with a tapered cement-clad clock tower set on a square plan and topped with a small metal-clad dome placed on an octagonal drum. It housed a battery driven clock until converted to electricity. (Source: monumentaustralia.org.au)
Each year, the Cub Scouts of 1st Woodend camp out on ANZAC Eve and make wreaths to lay at the local memorials during the following day’s parade. The whole group attends the ANZAC Day Parade and Cub Scouts are specially chosen to lay a wreath at the Clock Tower.
