Family History 101-1 Once in a class the professor asked us to write down something no one in the class would know about us. I wrote down that I liked dead towns and dead people. Sounds kind of morbid, but what it meant was that I like ghost towns and family history. If you look to the south you will see a cemetery. I have spent many Memorial Days in that cemetery decorating my ancestors’ graves. Some of my ancestors did not have the luxury of being buried in a cemetery. Thomas Girdlestone was buried in a common grave at Rock Creek, Wyoming. He had dug a grave for 12 of his friends that died from cold and starvation. They were members of the Willie Handcart Company. The next day Thomas and the man who helped him dig that grave would both be dead. Five days later his wife, Mary Betts, would also die. She was buried along the Green River. Their daughter, Emma, would make to the Salt Lake Valley. I am thankful to a cousin who would write down Emma’s experience four months before she died. It is the only account that we have of her experience. It was given to my grandmother who passed to my mother and then to me. I have repeated it many times to my children usually during an Idaho snow storm. How thankful I am that I have a roof over my head and protection from the elements on snowy days. I am thankful that Emma kept walking on snowy days.
