A cache to learn a little about a cultural icon.

You've seen the 1988 Best Picture, Rain Man, right? If not, you should!

Did you know the character of Rain Man was based on an amalgamation of 11 autistic or similarly challenged men? Barry Morrow, Rain Man's screenwriter, had a chance meeting with the man who inspired him to write the character. He sought out the other 10 men later. Aside from some philanthropic travel with his father after gaining a little fame from the movie, that man spent his entire life in Murray, Utah!

I was distantly aware there was a real life inspiration behind Rain Man but did not know any of the above until recently when Barry Morrow spoke at a Utah Film Society event. Mr. Morrow is here yearly to present the award to "... an actor, filmmaker, or subject of a film who is positively impacting societal perceptions of individuals with disabilities." The award is funded in part by money earned from Rain Man. It's presented in Utah because of the man behind the character.

At Stage 1 (Posted Coordinates)

Travel to the posted coordinates to learn the man's name and a few other details. When there is snow on the ground or outside of 8am to sunset hours, it is certainly possible to get the information to find stage 2 online. However, take the time to visit the posted coordinates. It's a cool memorial.

Use the information on the plaque to get the coordinates for the next stage

A = Birth month of man's father

B = Last digit of man's death year

C = Sum of the number of letters in his father's first and middle names then subtract the number of letters in the man's middle name which is the name he was known by

D = Number of screws on the plaque

E = Number of faces on the plaque minus third digit of father's birth year

F = Number of words at the top of the plaque that describe the man's relationship with his father

G = Second digit of man's birth year

H = Number of letters in the man's first name

I = Subtract first digit of man's death day from second digit of man's death day (e.g. Death Day=xy; I=y-x)

J = Sum of father's death day and death month

Stage 2 coordinates are  N 40° AB.CDE W 111° FG.HIJ

Stage 2

Stage 2 is an analogy for what it can be like to be to interact with people like this inspiring man.

Solve Stage 2 to get the coordinates to the cache.

LOOK AT THE ATTRIBUTES!!! You need a TOTT to complete this stage.

The property owner at stage 2 has given permission for its presence but there may be others around who do not know about the cache.  If approached while solving stage 2, please don't be mysterious. Explain what you are doing and give the name that's at the bottom of the stash note as the person who granted permission. This spot was chosen because it is quiet and should allow you to work in peace whether you choose to sit near the site or in your car.  Please exercise the same respect here that comes more naturally at places like stage 1. Thanks!

Stage 3 (Final)

In the interest of preventing trespassing, there is parking 450 feet to the west. Check out satellite view.
