To log the cache, send me the answers to the following question.
1. What color is the Ignimbrite in San Antonio de Lipez?
2. Describe the surface structure of the stone?
3. Look at a stone closely, preferably a fresh rupture or protected area. Can you recognize individual minerals / crystals / inclusions? What color and size do they have?
Picture is necessary and should show that you have been at the earthcache with at least your geocaching name or yourself in the picture.
San Antonio de Lipez
The information on the place itself is very thin and contradictory. Every guide here seems to invent his own story. On the one hand, we were told that the Incas were already here, and in the next sentence, that the Spaniards settled here first after the conquest.
The reason people settled on over 4.600m was gold, silver and copper. This was, like in Potosi still today, quarried in narrow mines by individual mining workers. The ores were then crushed by hand between basalt. In some houses these stones can still be found. The gold was then washed out.
There are various myths about the abandoning of the place. A pact with the devil, which was not fullfilled, gases in the shafts and simply the lack of profitability. You may decide which version you like most. It seems certain that the place was abandoned by the last inhabitants in 1960.
Ignimbrite
The area around San Antonio de Lipez is dominated by the rock of Ignimbrite. This rock is a volcanic rock, which is formed as a deposit of pyroclastic streams. As a rule, the pyroclastic current carries with it volcanic material and deposits it. Sometimes the heat fats / fuses the material immediately.
The resulting rock is robust and erosion-resistant, making it an excellent material. e.g. in house construction. In San Antonio Lipez almost all the ruins are built of Ignimbrite..
Some facts about the Ignimbrite layer:.
- Emerging from: 7.1 - 9.7 million years
- Thickness: ~ 200 m
- Ingredients: Dazit, Rhyodazite and Tuff
- Covered the Quehua Formation.
The covered Quehua layer is evident in many other places in the region. Its age is estimated to be 17-22.9 million years. It also consists of pyroclastic rock, tuff breccia and other agglomerates. The hydrothermal and mineral-rich fluids penetrated into the fissures of this rock.

- Espesor: ~ 200 m
- Ingredientes: Dazit, Rhyodazite y Tuff
