Geocache Description:

The given coordinates take you to the Founders Memorial Park memorial for the former Broadway Cemetery.  Complete a short field puzzle to determine the final coordinates for the cache.

Broadway (Clark) Cemetery is one of two former cemteries that make up Founders Memorial Park in uptown Whittier.  The Broadway Cemetery officially opened in 1902 according to city records, but the earliest headstone listed 1881 for a burial date, and there were many stones with deceased dates prior to 1902.  As the years went on, less upkeep was done on both cemeteries. My mom grew up in Whittier in the 40s and 50s and remembers the run-down cemeteries with tall grass growing around the headstones. By 1958, both this cemetery and the adjoining Mount Olive were neglected and declared nuisances. In 1967 the cemetery committee began contacting next-of-kin prior to removing headstones for Founders Memorial Park development.  Remains that family members claimed were transferred to other cemeteries, but the remains of the unclaimed still reside underground at the park as they could not legally be moved.  The names of the deceased are listed on the memorial plaque. Use the names on the plaque to determine the coordinates from the following chart.  Listings are in the format of E-7-5-F, where the first value is E or W for the EAST or WEST side of the memorial, the second value is the PANEL (there are 6 panels on each side), the third value is the ROW within the given panel, and the fourth value is F, M, or L for the NUMBER OF LETTERS in the FIRST, MIDDLE, or LAST name. If there are two columns of names on a panel, use the LEFT column. Punctuation marks are not letters, so do not count them. For example, W-1-1-L corresponds to the West side, First panel, First row, Last name. The name that appears there is Eugene R. Adams, so count the number of letters in the last name ADAMS to get the result, 5. N 33 59.ABC W 118 02.DEF A: W-6-8-M B: E-2-13-L C: W-1-34-F D: E-4-27-F E: W-3-22-F F: E-5-11-F The park is closed between 10pm and sunrise; please, NO NIGHT CACHING.  Animals are specifically prohibited.
