Geocache Description:

Welcome to the Atchafalaya Basin Geotrail, a series of twenty-four (24) geocaches that have been placed in and around the Atchafalaya Basin to highlight important features and to help tell the story about how water has influenced the region.  Although the story is about water, you don't need a boat to claim these geocaches! For more information please visit our related webpage above.

Centrally located between Lafayette and New Orleans along the Highway 90 corridor in Morgan City, the Cajun Coast Welcome Center was built at the edge of a swamp. It offers not only the type of interpretive exhibits that are typically found at a welcome center—including a swamp replica featuring a life-size bald cypress tree, alligator, and blue heron—but also stunning views of the real, living cypress-tupelo swamp that surrounds it.  Plentiful information and helpful staff will help you plan your Cajun adventure whether you are looking for cultural, culinary, historical, or natural recreation. DNR’s Atchafalaya Basin Program contributed to the construction costs of the welcome center, which was completed in 2014 and is operated by the St. Mary Parish Tourist Commission.
