On Interstate 10 between Baton Rouge and Lafayette, the Atchafalaya Basin Bridge spans the 20-mile distance across the Atchafalaya Basin Floodway System between the East and West Atchafalaya Protection Levees. The Atchafalaya Welcome Center provides a rest stop along this stretch at mile marker 121 near the community of Butte La Rose. This welcome center was designed through an interagency effort—including DNR’s Atchafalaya Basin Program, the Department of Transportation and Development, and the Department of Culture Recreation and Tourism— to be a rich cultural experience for those who stopped in. It provides informational exhibits including maps, films, handmade crafts, and original artwork that represent different traditions and occupations of the people of the Atchafalaya Basin. The overall experience highlights the special connection between Louisiana’s people and the natural environment of the Atchafalaya Basin. Adjacent to the Welcome Center is a public boat launch as well as the future site of another Atchafalaya Basin Program project, an ADA-accessible walking trail.
The Atchafalaya Welcome Center is open daily from 8:30 a.m. - 5:00 p.m.
