Geocache Description:

This is one in a series of 26 caches.

R is for Red Osier Dogwood. Latin name :Cornus stolonifera or C. sericea.   There isn't an example of this plant at the GZ, but you will see them if you continue down the Chumstick Hwy.



 


This is a many stemmed, deciduous shrub.  The leaves and branches are opposite. The young stems are usually bright red, giving the plant it's common name.  It is easily propegated from cuttings.

Flower are small and white, in flat-topped clusters.  The fruit are clusters are small white berries. They were sometimes eaten by native peoples, but are more importantly a food source for bird and other animals.

Red Osier Dogwood grows in low to middle elevations, in moist to wed areas. You won't find this plant in desert climates.

It is an important food source for deer, elk and moose. The inner bark was used by indiginous peoples to treat a variety of ailments.
