Captain Joseph Bates, also known affectionately as Elder Bates, was one of the original founders of the Seventh-day Adventist Church.
In his youth, Joseph’s desire to become a sailor was fulfilled when he first served as a cabin boy. Eventually, he became captain of his own ship, and pursued the life of a sailor for 21 years. During this period of his life, he served as a prisoner of war, among other ventures.
Joseph Bates became a champion of the temperance cause , and was instrumental in establishing one of the first temperance societies in the US.
Bates joined the Millerite Movement that swept across the US in the 1830s and 1840s. Shortly after what became known as “The Great Disappointment,” Elder Bates accepted the seventh-day Sabbath and became known as the “Apostle of the Sabbath.” Eventually, Bates joined with others from the Advent Movement, and became a founder of the Seventh-day Adventist Church.
Bates became the author of several articles and tracts, as well as his autobiography.
Looking today at Bates' tomb, I'm reminded of a song that Joseph would have been well acquainted with. Part of it goes like this:
The mossy old graves where the pilgrims sleep
Shall be open as wide as before.
