Assawoman is a teeny tiny little area on the
Eastern Shore in Accomack County.
The original spelling was “Assawawan” from 1938 – 1966.
Meaning that someone intentionally changed it to
“Assawoman” ON PURPOSE.
Assawoman received its 15 minutes in the spotlight by making the
Huffington Post’s list of Most Unfortunate Town Names.
We cannot make this stuff up.
