Feel free to skip to the end for cache specific details, but I think this background story is kind of fun. My sister, a cacher who lives in Redmond, WA and is geobassethound, has a whole series, nearly forty now, of basset-themed hides around throughout her WA area. Our family history with bassets dates back to Maggie, who -- family lore has it -- was one of the original models for Hush Puppy shoes back in the day. I was already studying at Cal when Maggie joined the family, but geobassethound grew up with her and our Mom had several more after Maggie went to that great Doggie Spa in the Sky. Of the five siblings, geobassethound is the only one who has made bassets a constant in her life. There have been some good ones, some great ones (the current big sloppy male Buck qualifies there) and one or two insane ones. When starting to hide caches, she already had a pretty good thrift store collection of bassets in varying sizes and materials. Hence the idea to use them as caches with appropriate titles. My wife, who is mostly a muggle, and I refer to ourselves as Weird Westie People because, well, let's face it we've got a house littered with its share of Westie paraphernalia. And so, with a recent visit here from geobassethound, we hit on the idea of a series dedicated to Westie Sam. It starts with this hide, a small tin that in its first incarnation held eight small shortbread cookies. Inside the hide, along with the log are a couple small trinkets that would like to travel on. A small bit of hillside scrambling accounts for the terrain rating.
