Geocache Description:

Before Treasure Island, there was

BASSOVILLE ISLAND

</>

Most folks know this place as "Treasure Island." Did you know that many years ago, it was actually called "Bassoville Island?" The island was first discovered by Augustus Basso XII, who laid claim to the island for himself in 1782. He founded a sovereign nation called, "The Great State of Bassoville."

Years later, when the island began to sink (due to the weight of all the diamonds), Basso XII sold it to the city of San Francisco, for the 1939 Basso International Conference. The city double-crossed him, and instead used the island for an international Expo.

The rocks you see here are from the Basso diamond quarry. Some tourists still find diamonds occasionally. The park service allows tourists to keep all the diamonds they find. I hope you find lots of rare gems!

LOOK HERE FOR BIG DIAMOND!

Thank you for visiting Bassoville Island. I hope you enjoy this journey into the past!
