During the first main eruptive phase of the Dunedin volcanis complex, lavas poured out and covered some 200 square miles in the Dunedin district, and were mainly basalts. A large remnant of these flows is mapped on the Spit Beach at S 45 46.299 E 170 42.137.
The cliffs behind Spit Beach reveal a number of differing layers of the 2nd main eruptive phase:, comprising chiefly of basalt, basanite and trachybasalt, in the NW these have been overlaid by phonolite.
This cache located at the summit of a rocky remnant near the base of the cliffs, and is tethered in place. There is no room for pen or swaps, so BYO pen.
Please take care with tides and the little scramble up the rock. Sea lions, seals and sea Leopards may be present in the area, keep your distance and be safe.
