I mellomalderen var det kanskje eit lite samfunn i Smeddalen som ved sidan av jakt og fiske livnærte seg med utvinning av myrmalm og med å smi reidskap og våpen som dei selde. Klimaet var varmare då og fjellviddene hadde skogvekst. Kanskje brukte desse «smedaene» St. Tomas-kyrkja. Kyrkjeklokkene vart støypt av folket som budde i Smeddalen på den tida. Då klokkene var ferdigstøpte, vart dei lasta ombord i ein båt og rodd over Smeddalsvatnet. Men uhellet var ute. Den eine klokka fall over bord, og det var uråd å få den opp att. Formene til klokkene var allereide ødelagt, og det vart derfor naudsynt å støype ei ny klokke, som ble litt mindre enn den fyste.



In the Middle Ages, there was perhaps a small community in Smeddalen that besides hunting and fishing was extraction of marshmill and the forging of tools and weapons that they sold. The climate was warmer then and the mountain ranges were wooded. Perhaps these "smiths" used St. Thomas Church. The church bells were cast by the people who lived in Smeddalen at that time. When the bells were finished, where they boarded a boat and rowed over Smeddalsvannet. But the accident was out. One clock fell overboard, and it was unwise to get it back up. The shape of the bells was already destroyed, and it was therefore necessary to cast a new bell, which was slightly smaller than the bell.
