Geocache Description:

The island of Ireland has 26 County Tops (the highest point in each county), with several being shared summits, making up the full 32. Roscommon has the honour of owning the 27th highest (or 6th lowest!) county high point - Seltannasaggart, a townland near the top of Corrie Mountain, is its highest point, but is neither at the top of the hill, nor at the small cairn that is a short distance away. The cache is, however, at the highest spot.

Approach to Seltanassaggart

Seltannasaggart

At 412m above sea level, the administrative boundary between Roscommon and Leitrim reaches its highest point and right here you will find the cache.

You can get to this cache in one of two ways - you can walk, or you can drive. The location of the cache is slap bang in the middle of a large wind farm and the area these days is criss-crossed by many, er, roads... basically they are hardcore tracks laid for the enormous lorries that deliver the Spion Kop wind turbines, so they will very happily support your car. You just need to drive slowly to protect your tires and paintwork!

Don't worry about access issues - the waymarked Arigna Miners' Way passes within meters of the cache and there are no access restrictions.

The appropriate access point for driving is provided below; there is a cattle grid beside the gate for you to drive over.Whether you hike up, or drive, either way, you'll likely need hiking boots or wellies, as the ground is wet and boggy near the cache, even in high summer!

Roughly 70 to the southeast of the actual CHP, and about 1m lower, you will find a small cairn and fence post that seems to be commonly treated as the county high point of Roscommon - but, in fact, it is not

Not the CHP

WARNING

Do not interfere with, or approach, any of the wind turbines or electrical sub-stations; entry to the area is by agreed access and the whole site is monitored by CCTV. And getting electrocuted or squashed by falling windmills will lead to a sudden end to your day. And your caching career. Jokes aside - this is an industrial site as should be treated with respect. Also, keep out of the area during lightening storms!

The Cache

The cache is a small PET tube painted brown; facing the wind turbine, it is hidden at the foot of a small tuft of heather (ickle peat hag?), with a stone placed in front. Please re-place the stone it carefully as it will be easily muggled otherwise.

Leave No Trace

Leave No trace

The cache has been placed in accordance with the "Leave No Trace" principles.

Please respect these principles when searching for the cache.
