Geocache Description:

This is a CHALLENGE Cache. The Cache IS at the Posted Coordinates but you MUST complete the challenge before logging a find.

This is a challenge - it is not meant to be easy. This challenge is not going to be for all cachers - but then again, that's why its called a challenge!

This is a series of challenge caches along Fairfax County's Cross County Trail.

You must complete the necessary qualifications of ACCUMULATING 80 POINTS. This challenge may only be logged once regardless of how many different ways you may rack up 80 points.
Note: the checker will grade all tests. If you encounter an issue, contact the CO.

Also Note: the DELORME challenge is no longer a part of the required curriculum.

All logs will need to be submitted with proof of component completion (use the Project-GC checker). Logs not meeting requirements will be deleted and your tuition forfeited. All finders will be e-mailed an electronic PDF version of the PHD degree certificate, if they provide a valid e-mail address. The P.H.D. (Placed, Hidden, Distance) Degree in Geocaching is only conferred on an elite group of cachers who have exerted a sustained effort to achieve completion of the components of the curriculum listed below. In order to claim this find and complete the challenge, you must achieve eighty (80) points using any of the combinations below with the following exception:

You may use either the full or half version of qualifications, but not both. For example, if claiming 20 points of course credit for a 10-year Jasmer grid, then you cannot also use the 10 points of course credit for the 5-year Jasmer option.

EXTRA CREDIT:

Due to new Groundspeak restrictions on challenges, the DELORME is no longer acceptable as a part of this challenge but if you want extra credit - you can optionally include this in your curriculum:

DELORME CHALLENGES (0 points towards degree; capped at two states maximum)-- in order to get extra credit for this segment of the curriculum, you must have fulfilled the requirements and logged a DeLorme challenge in a state.

Rules for the challenge caches in this series:
  1. As with all caches, the decision as to whether a log is valid rests solely with the cache owner.
  2. We have provided a verification tool. It might not be perfect and is therefore not the final authority (see #1).
  3. You may sign the log before completing the challenge. If you have do this, please use a "Write note" log to record your find and then a "Found it" log once you have completed the challenge.
  4. Your log does not need to contain enough information to prove you have met the challenge - that can be determined from the Project-GC checker. I suggest you use the verification checker on this cache page to prove you have met the challenge. Please do not provide the entire output of the checker as it can sometimes be quite verbose.
  5. I may double-check your qualifications with the Project-GC checker after you have logged your find.
  6. Any finds that do not qualify for this challenge or lack a signature on logsheet will be deleted without notice.

ABOUT THE CROSS COUNTY TRAIL:

This cache is not on the trail but is easy to access from the the Cross County Trail (CCT). There are over 50 caches along the 40 mile trail. This is no power trail as many of the hides are different in type, size, difficulty and terrain. If you want to know where to park or get food or a bathroom along the trail you need to check out CCT (CCT - Welcome to the Cross County Trail). It is loaded with valuable information including maps of the entire CCT.

Many thanks go out to the Woodland Clan from KC for the original PHD cache (GC441J5) and the permission to replicate it here.
