I've been keen to place this cache since finding The Runway just down the hill in 2013. This set of boulders stands out in my childhood memories, as a place I would play while my father, a road tester for the old DMR, would work on the then new highway section. Prior to the opening of the overtaking lane coming up the hill from Gunning, it was a slow slog for car drivers stuck behind semitrailers as they chugged to the top.
Dad would collect road base samples, and perform density testing along newly formed sections of road, prior to the application of the bitumen. If the densities weren't right, it was back out with the rollers till the underlying pavement strength was satisfactory.
I remember travelling here, and many other sections of new roads and highways, with dad in the DMR Landrover during my school holidays. Fond memories!
Access this cache from the uphill side of the rocks. Its not too far in, but please be careful when replacing. It could easily end up in an inaccessible position.
You are looking for a small plastic container with logbook, pencil and small swaps. This can be a busy section of road, with the Crookwell turnoff a short distance away, so try to look inconspicuous as cars pass by. Great spot from the top of the boulder for a photo down the valley if you are keen.
