The Carthusian Order had a strict system of disciplin which did not arrract many followers in England and consequently Beauvale was one of only ninecharterhouses which were established in this country. A Carthusian monk was required to live in absolute silance and in solitary confinement, only meeting with his fellow monks andprior of the chapel services and in the refectory on Sundays and Saints' Dayswhen a commom meal was eaten. The priory continued for nearly two centuries, but in 1515 it gained historical notoriety for the martyrdom of its prior, Robert Lawrence who was hanged for resisting King Henry VIII's sissolution of the monasteries. Therefore, the priory fell rapidly into decline ans was surrendered to the King in 1540.
